Cashew milk, oats & banana smoothie

One never stops learning. Only a few weeks ago I would have never imagined that oats in milkshakes actually work. I mean, rolled oats! Porridge is the only thing that comes into my mind and it features steaming hot milk. I would have never thought of adding plain oats to a milkshake, yet apparently not only is this a thing, but it actually works really well! A spoonful of oats and your shake will gain texture and will also be enriched with a bunch of precious nutrients such as iron and fiber.

Should I be ashamed of admitting so? Certainly not! I am actually admitting that I have learned something new. I am not a big fan of porridge, so stuffing oats in other foods I enjoy more is a good way to get to include them in my diet. So why not.

So a bunch of weeks ago I decided to treat myself and a friend to a healthy fix. We cut up a banana and put it in the freezer for one hour. Then we turned that into one of the ingredients of this improvised smoothie.

  • 1 banana (frozen)
  • 200 ml cashew milk
  • 2 tbsp rolled oats
  • 1 tsp unsweetend cocoa powder
  • 3 tsp brown sugar

Add all ingredients to a blender jug and pulse until smooth. As I mentioned above, we used chilled banana, as it did not get to freeze up by the time we made this smoothie. When I made it again later I used completely frozen banana (remember to slice it before freezing), that I had left out of the freezer for 15 minutes before blending, and the result was even better.

This smoothie is quite healthy, but I enjoy it mostly for its taste. Since it features cashew milk, it also happens to be fully vegan. Which doesn’t make it any better, or worse. It still is awesomely tasty. The banana and the oats give it a nice thick texture, and using chilled milk and frozen banana will keep the temperature of this shake pretty low, making it the perfect summer breakfast. Because summer is soon to come, also to Sweden.
