A couple of weekends ago I visited a ski resort located a couple of hours north of here called Kläppen for some fine Swedish springtime skiing. The main reason for this trip was to see my boyfriend and some of his colleagues from the ski resort where they work taking part in a ski race. My role was that of official photographer for our party: I stood alongside the track and collected photographic evidence of the race. The weather was so beautiful it almost felt surreal to be actually skiing in what already looked like spring.
On the slopes
What’s left of the snow was, in fact, only on the slopes. Everywhere else it had all melted down. What did not look and feel like winter was also the strong sunlight, something that in winter doesn’t occur. Over the winter months the sun is always too low on the horizon to get decently warm, and even sunny days have a cool tone and chilly temperatures. The April sun is definitely a warmer feature, both in terms of temperature and colours. April is a good moment for some springtime skiing.
Easter decorations were still up on some trees. In Sweden there is this adorable custom to dress tree branches (still bare at this time of the year) in coloured feathers (I also had my share of feathers in my apartment this year).
In the cabin
I’m no pro when it comes to skiing, but I really enjoyed the easier slopes and beautiful views up there. It was fun to see a different setting for once, as I had only skied in Sweden in the ski resort we have in our area. And it was fun to be actually lodged at the resort, as everytime we go skiing in our area we drive there and go back home to sleep. We rented a beautiful cabin that we shared with half of our group. At walking distance from the slopes, in was located in the middle of the forest and the view from outside of the cabins was this:
Inside it was even better: a huge open space with a very high ceiling, an extra-large sofa, a big table and a fully equipped kitchen. Rooms for the guests were located on two floors, and our cabin also included a private sauna and hot tub outside.
In the evening it got very cosy, when we would all watch movies on the giant couch under the Ikea lamp that was projecting interesting shadows all over the big room.
I can only imagine how beautiful it must be in the middle of the winter, when snow is everywhere and you can actually ski from your door to the slopes. But it was delightful also in the spring, and we’ve been incredibly lucky with the weather and could enjoy the beautiful colours of nature now that winter whiteness is gradually – finally! – melting away.
