Honey mustard glazed salmon

Honey-mustard glazed salmon, an easy salmon recipe that is baked in the oven with a delicious glaze that works as condiment. You will need a salmon fillet and a mix of just 4 ingredients to make the sauce. Let the oven do the job while you fix yourself a side dish to this salmon.

This recipe was conceived easy on purpose. I used to make it when I worked as a Home Economics teacher in a school here in Sweden. We had practical cooking lessons, and on one of those I featured this honey mustard glazed salmon. It's been a favourite for a long time, because it's a good recipe. And even my seventh grade pupils would be so proud of themselves because this recipe is hard to fail yet delivers a fantastic dish.

Ingredients and equipment

The ingredients needed for this recipe on a wooden table.
  • Salmon fillet - preferably fresh, but thawed will also work fine.
  • Honey - you can swap it out for maple syrup.
  • Soy sauce - this is the only ingredient here that provides saltiness.
  • Garlic - you can choose to press it, or finely mince it. Garlic paste is a good alternative.
  • Mustard - I have used Dijon, but the choice is really yours.
  • Black sesame - this is more for the aesthetic than flavour, but it's a nice touch.

For detailed quantities, please refer to the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

As for the equipment, this recipe does not require much. A bowl and whisk for mixing the glaze, a garlic press, an oven dish, baking paper. A silicone spatula makes it easiest to get all of the good glaze out from the bowl and onto the salmon.

Honey mustard salmon recipe tips

Due to the shape of the salmon fillet, the glaze will pour down it, as it naturally comes with a thicker and a thinner part. This is why it is important to fold the baking paper upwards, so the edges will collect the glaze that poured down the fish. Make sure these edges are as close to the fish as possible, so even the sides of the fillet are touching the glaze. You can use aluminium foil instead of baking paper, but it is easier to scoop up the glaze, once baked, from baking paper.

There is no salt featured in this recipe other than the soy sauce added to the glaze. To my taste, that is enough. However, if to your taste this dish is too blunt, feel free to add some salt to the finished product. I like that the saltiness is balanced by the sweetness, and I find it good as it is.

I have used liquid honey, as it has the best texture for making this glaze. If you have honey with a different texture, you can gently microwave it until it becomes liquid enough to stir with the other ingredients.
